The Glory of Names

For the love of onomatology...

There is so much to be said about names.  They give us an identity and uphold a longstanding tradition.  They affect our personality from the second they are given to us.  Are we unique, traditional, following in someone's footsteps?  Or maybe we fit in just fine.  I, personally, love names.  I love finding out about my own name, Megan, which I'd always thought was dull and unoriginal.  I love finding out about other's names as well and would love to help others who'd like to know more about their names to do so.  I believe I'll do two things here:  first, I'll write mini name reports for those who ask me; and second, I'll list my favorite and least favorite names.  Oh, and feel free to check out the links.  They're some of the best I've found.

My family:
I feel that my family has some pretty nice names, though most are rather traditional. I find it interesting to look at the names of each generation, so I'll present them to you as such.

Grandparents' gen: D:Albert, Muriel M: Barbara, Robert George

Parent's gen: D: Colleen, Albert, David, Michael, Jonathan, Daniel, Paul, Patrick M: Roberta, Robert, Paula, Paul, Thomas

My gen: D: Jeanne, Jack, Jay, Jeff, Beth, Nichole, Christina, Katrina, Albert, Christopher, Sarah, Joshua, Megan, Aaron, Alexander, Jaqueline, Thomas, Seth, Matthew
M: Megan, Brendan, Bethany, Jason, Tiffany, Victoria

The next gen (as far as I know): Brenna, David, Jace, Isaak, Maisie, Karina, August, Malcolm, Joshua

I noticed a few things while looking at middle names. The boys tend to have some family member's first or middle name for their middle name. The girls typically have Elizabeth or Ann(e). My sister, mother, grandmother and I all have Ann(e) for a middle name. For my sister and myself it's in commemoration of an ancestor, Lady Anne Cusack, who ran away from Ireland to America with her gardener.

Megan is the Welsh pet form of Margaret.  Margaret comes from the Greek 'margaron' which means 'a pearl.'  My middle name, Ann, came from Anna, which originally came from Hannah.  My last name was probably originally MacKenzie before my ancestors came to the US.  The British butchered foreign last names.
